Short answer
About 210 GB on PS5, according to store data. That's not official, and the day-one patch comes on top, so free up at least 250 GB. Pre-loading is reported to start on 12 November.
Where the 210 GB figure comes from
The size comes from PlayStation store data picked up by game-size trackers. Rockstar hasn't published an official size, and the Xbox size may differ.
Big games usually get a day-one patch, so treat 210 GB as the minimum.
Pre-load: start early
Digital pre-orders reportedly get a 7-day pre-load, which means downloading from 12 November. Starting early means you can play the moment it unlocks.
Boxed copies are reported to contain a download code rather than a disc, so they need the full download too.
How long will it take?
At 100 Mbps, 210 GB takes roughly 4 to 5 hours. At 25 Mbps, it's closer to 19 hours. Real speeds are usually slower than your plan's headline number, especially on launch day.

Do you need an external drive?
On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S you can play from the internal SSD or a supported expansion SSD. A standard USB hard drive can store games but usually can't run new-generation games.
